Admissions

The application process is open. The deadline for applications is the 15th of May 2024.

The applicants for the Summer School are expected to have at least a Master’s degree in economics and/or econometrics or in relevant subjects with a strong background in economics and currently be engaged in academia. Some may be chosen from outside academia (e.g., government, private sector, NGOs), if they have the minimum academic qualification and relevant experience.

The course description contains information on the background in econometrics, finance, economic theory or other subjects that participants should possess in order to take full advantage of the course. In addition, participants must have a good knowledge of the English language. Your oral comprehension and expression must be sufficient for effective class participation. Your reading comprehension and writing skills must be sufficient for responding clearly and accurately to course assignments.

All these are, however, basic guidelines, and all cases will be considered on their own merits. You do not have to prove that you have met these prerequisites, but you are responsible for ensuring you are adequately prepared for the summer course. Participants will be selected according to the following three criteria:

  • Educational background
  • Relevance of the ASSEE topic to the student’s research agenda
  • Letter of recommendation

Approximately 30 students will be admitted to the Summer School. We intend to restrict the class size to ensure an interactive course and discussion. Additionally, we aim to create a truly international student body.

Students admitted to the Advanced Summer School in Economics and Econometrics are expected to participate fully in the program attending all lectures, computer labs and social events.

ASSEE tuition fees are set to €1,200 for PhD students and €2,000 for non-students. These fees include:

  • Accommodation at the University of Crete dormitories for six nights (from Sunday to Saturday) including breakfast -- (please let us know if you prefer to arrange your own accommodation),
  • Two coffee breaks during classes from Monday to Friday,
  • Daily lunch at the University of Crete restaurant from Monday to Friday,
  • A welcome reception on Monday evening,
  • A farewell dinner in a local tavern on Friday evening,
  • An excursion to Plakias on Wednesday afternoon
  • An excursion to the Minoan Palace of Eleftherna and Archaeological Museum on Saturday morning,
  • All teaching materials (i.e., class notes, program codes) provided by the instructor.

Tuition fees are payable by bank transfer. Specific guidelines are given upon acceptance. The corresponding invoices are handed to the participants in the last day of the course together with their certificates of attendance. Accompanying persons have an extra cost of €250 that includes all ASSEE activities except of morning lectures and computer practicum.

A 15% reduction in fees is available to the following groups:

  • Current graduate students at the University of Crete
  • University of Crete alumni
  • Former ASSEE students

To ensure that the discount is awarded, please contact us by email.

For groups of five (5) students or more we are offering a 20% discount on tuition fees. In any case for groups of students please contact us before the application deadline. After the 1st of June, group discount is not eligible.

The deadline for the payment of fees is June 1st 2024. If cancellation is confirmed before July 1st 2024 (note: only written cancellation by e-mail will be accepted), fees will be refunded less a cancellation fee of €50. In the case where the applicant has omitted to inform us of a cancellation, no fees will be refunded.

Please note that unfortunately no scholarships are available from the organizing institution for participation in the summer school. Candidates should look for funding from their own institutions.

After the completion of the Summer School, all students will be provided with a certificate of attendance signed by the Distinguished Professor and the ASSEE Academic Director. This certificate will include their name and affiliation.

If you wish to receive credit for your summer school course you will need to contact either your Study Abroad Office or the office in your university that deals with external credit. We strongly advise you to do this before you apply. It is up to your home institution to decide if and how many credits can be awarded. The Organizing Committee is however happy to provide any necessary information to your registry or academic advisor, to help them to evaluate the course.

ASSEE is equivalent to one course from a graduate degree. Generally, our policy is that students participating fully in the academic activities of the Summer School (morning lectures and afternoon labs) and successfully completing a take-home assignment can earn 4 ECTS credits. Participants should check with their home institution whether these ECTS are transferable.

The ASSEE Organizing Committee recommends that all participants from outside the European Union and Switzerland verify their VISA requirements with the Greek Embassy in their home country. You are responsible to obtain the required VISA to enable lawful participation in the Summer School. If you do not obtain the required VISA by the start date of the Summer School, you will not be able to participate in the Summer School.

Following your acceptance onto the programme you will need to pay tuition fees before requesting a summer school visa letter. If you are arranging your own accommodation we will state this on the letter and will not confirm any accommodation details. A Summer School visa letter will not be produced until the above is completed. Once completed, students can request the Summer School visa letter through a direct e-mail to the ASSEE Managing Director.

There are three delivery options, we can either send a pdf of the visa letter by email or post summer school visa letters out via regular mail or students can request that we send them by courier which will be subject to an additional charge.
